Uno de los problemas mayores que tengo al aprender inglés son las preposiciones. El sistema parece ser completamente arbitrario, sin pies ni cabeza: on the bus pero in the car. Cuando aparecen los phrasal verbs la cosa empeora: “I made up my mind while my wife was making up her face”. Por eso agradecemos mucho cuando tenemos alguna guía y alguna regla parece cumplirse.
Este es el caso de algunos verbos que adquieren con la preposición at una connotación agresiva, mientras que con la preposición to se suavizan, indicando más bien dirección. Es el caso de to shout:
“He shouted to me from across the street, but I couldn’t hear what he was saying”
En este caso se dirigía a mí en voz muy alta con el fin de que yo lo escuchara.
“He shouted at me to get up and get dressed quickly. I was stunned at his tone, and whilst dressing I saw him throw my wristwatch, which I had got for my ninth birthday,…”
En este último, un relato de una víctima de la Noche de los Cristales Rotos, en 1938, los gritos son para que la chica se vista rápido, mientras ésta, atónita, ve su reloj pulsera hecho añicos ante la furia del individuo.

La distinción también abarca a to swear:
A county court judge has told magistrates he swore at police during a row in a kebab shop because he was “shocked and frightened” at being marched out to their van.
en cuyo caso es insultar, decir groserías.
Of his free will he swore to her, as knight, …
parte de una poesía de Chaucer donde el caballero jura solemnemente a la dama.
Incluso el uso de estas dos preposiciones no tiene por qué conformar un verdadero phrasal. Tomemos por ejemplo:
“Throw the book to me, please. I can’t reach it.”
Si por un momento nos confundimos y decimos
“Throw the book at me”
convertimos al libro en un arma arrojadiza.
¿Qué preposición le parece que se usará con to shoot, si es que se usa una?
- Someone in the crowd shot the President.
- Someone in the crowd shot to the President.
- Someone in the crowd shot at the President.
